First Friday marks 15th anniversary
First Friday celebrates its 15th anniversary with a host of events from 5-11 p.m. at various venues downtown. Here are a couple of highlights.
■ P Moss is best known in Las Vegas as the owner of Double Down Saloon and Frankie’s Tiki Room. But he’s also an author, and his new book, “Vegas Tabloid,” is described as “a twisted, fast-paced thriller about a wisecracking con man and his sideshow troupe of small-time criminals who accidentally become the most popular performers on the Las Vegas Strip.” He’ll discuss the book and sign copies from 7-8 p.m. Friday at The Writer’s Block, 1020 Fremont St. thewritersblock.org
■ If Cosplay is your scene, visit The Nerd for the Sabra Kadabra Cosplay Runway Fashion Show. Asia Jade will host, and in addition to the opportunity to have pictures taken with the models, Corso Studio Arts will provide a live art and tech experience that promises to make Cosplay come to life. Things get underway at 9 p.m. on the second floor of Neonopolis at Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street. thenerd.com
Food, gardening festival on Saturday
The second annual “Grow Your Own Festival: How to Grow Fresh, Organic Produce in Las Vegas” will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Vegas Roots Community Garden, 715 N. Tonopah Drive. The free event will feature music, food and gardening demos. Local chefs will share a demo stage, with the lineup including Donald Lemperle of VegeNation, Aureole’s John Church, Shane Stuart of Gardens in a Glass, Emily Brubaker of Urban Seed Foundation and El Dorado Cantina’s Chef Paco. There will also be a beer and wine garden, auction, general store and kids’ program.
BikeFest to rumble through downtown
The 17th annual Las Vegas BikeFest will run through Sunday in the Fremont East Entertainment District. You don’t need to own a motorcycle, or even a bike, to enjoy the live entertainment, contests, giveaways, vendors and food. But checking out all those hogs might inspire you to break out the leather jacket a little early this season. lasvegasbikefest.com
Dave vs. Mahoney a benefit event
X 107.5 FM’s morning team Dave and Mahoney will take their on-air beefs to the ring on Saturday night at Dave vs. Mahoney 2, Downtown Boogaloo. The boxing match and associated festivities will run from 7-10 p.m. at the Downtown Events Center. The opening bouts will include, believe it or not, Batman vs. Elvis and Santa vs. Joey the Leprechaun. Admission is free, with paid VIP seating available. Proceeds benefit St. Jude’s Ranch.
