The Ultimate Sumo League, the newest professional sports league, will debut in the bright lights of Las Vegas when the world’s finest Rikishi (Sumo Wrestlers) compete at Park Theater at Monte Carlo Resort and Casino Saturday, April 28.
The U.S. and World Tour League plans to hold competitions in New York, Orlando, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Seattle and other major cities, according to President & CEO Noah Goldman.
Tickets starting at $59.50, not including applicable service charges, go on sale Thursday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. PST. Tickets can be purchased online at ParkTheaterLV.com or Ticketmaster.com. Tickets also can be purchased through the MGM Resorts International Call Center at (866) 740-7711. For more show and ticket information, visit ParkTheaterLV.com.
“Our goal is to bring World Class Sumo Wrestling to the world and what better place to debut the league than in Las Vegas with our great partner, MGM Resorts International,” said Goldman. “Our league plans to compete in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America and Australia.”
“It will be an evening of sport that is entertaining and action-packed. Our Sumo match will feature up to 40 individual matches in a double elimination format that will crown a Champion and runner-up. The Ultimate Sumo League will have a year-long Grand Prix contest with the winners of individual matches receiving points, and the quarterfinalist, semi-finalists and finalists receiving extra points.”
“We are excited about the challenge of making Sumo Wrestling a major international sport with a dynamic and energetic fan base. Our Rikishi will be ambassadors to bring Sumo Wrestling to the world while entertaining and captivating our audiences.”
Goldman announced the league this morning and was joined by six-time U.S. National Sumo Champion Robert Daniel (Memphis, TN), 12-time U.S. Sumo Champion Dan Kalbfleisch (Los Angeles, CA) and Soslan Gagloev (Russia) who competes in the Japanese Professional League.
“Sumo is a sport of great athleticism and strategy,” said Goldman. “It is not just large men pushing their opponent around, but it is also skilled athletes that use their skills and knowledge of force and balance to defeat their opponent. There is a great power and beauty in a Sumo match that is atavistic, epic and universal in nature. And there will be music, lights and an interactive experience that will captivate and entertain our audiences.”
The Ultimate Sumo League anticipates distributing content on live television, streaming on the internet, or taped broadcasts.
The Ultimate Sumo League also is developing a full line of merchandise, games, clothing, computer games, books, and toys that will feature the brand and popularize Sumo wrestling.
The Ultimate Sumo League will provide clinics and academies to teach Sumo wrestling.
